There are a multitude of reasons to get a dental crown—from restoring decayed teeth, to covering metal fillings, or to protecting teeth weakened by a root canal. In order to experience all of the benefits that a crown can provide for your dental and overall health, the crown has to be made to match your specific needs. While this crown is being made, a temporary crown will be installed, enabling you to function normally while keeping the tooth protected. Temporary crowns, however, are more delicate than permanent crowns, so it is important to follow the eating tips below in order to avoid damaging them.
- Choose Soft Foods- With temporary crowns, you should avoid hard, tough, or sticky foods. Examples of these foods are gum, steak, uncooked vegetables, hard candy, and nuts. These food categories are not ideal for temporary crowns because they can loosen the glue holding the crown in place. Instead, choose soft foods, such as pasta or eggs.
- Limit Intake of Sugary Foods- It is normal for there to be a small gap between the temporary crown and your gum line. Because of this gap, plaque generated from eating sugary foods could become stuck under the crown and cause decay. Rather than artificially sugary foods, you can drink a smoothie or have sugar-free versions of treats, like pudding.
- Stick to Foods and Drinks with a Moderate Temperature- Consuming foods or drinks that are very hot or cold can cause discomfort if you have any exposed nerve endings. Options with extreme temperatures can also decrease the efficacy of the glue holding the crown in place. Instead of hot soup, turn to a cold soup, such as gazpacho, or let a hot soup cool before eating it.
